Veterinary Healthcare Communication
Overview
Veterinary Healthcare Communication Train-the-Trainer Course July 15-19, 2024 Application
Many have received notice regarding the closing of the Institute for Healthcare Communication (IHC). Those of us in the veterinary field owe a debt of gratitude to IHC for its commitment and development of curricular content, a faculty-oriented train-the-trainer program, and symposia that advanced communication in veterinary healthcare since 2002. The work of IHC provided many of us with the necessary impetus and resources to implement communication skills training in our academic programs when we would have otherwise been unable to do so.
I am happy to announce that Texas A&M has acquired the intellectual property rights to the IHC veterinary content. The Center for Educational Technologies (CET), based within our veterinary college, plans to continue to sustain the momentum of the veterinary communication program and to update and develop new content moving forward. We will be rebranding the content to “Veterinary Healthcare Communication (VHC)”. We have employed content experts to assist in the rebranding and updating of content and will offer our first VHC train-the-trainer program from July 15th – July 19th, 2024 in College Station, Texas. Cost for faculty attendees will be $4000 per person. This program is pending RACE approval. Please note this is a $2000 reduction over recent tuition costs. We are committed to making this program accessible and affordable for our veterinary colleagues. Registration for the July training is available at this link https://tamu.estore.flywire.com/products/veterinary-healthcare-communications-204325.
As you know a license, renewable yearly, is required to use the materials (slides, workbooks, videos) within your programs. For current licensees, we will honor your current contract through its expiration on July 1, 2024. For those who wish to renew your license, renewal rates will be $2250 per year for access to all content. This is a 22% decrease from the previous $2900 per year rate. As new content is developed, it will be available to licensees in July of each year with the renewal. We will be reaching out to all current license holders directly. If you do not have a current license and wish to establish a license, please email me and we will start the process to begin a new license on July 1, 2024.
We are committed to developing curricula content that serves all programs of veterinary medicine and will be forming an external advisory committee to ensure inclusion of current issues facing our profession are addressed as we move forward.
Warm regards,

In 2002, IHC expanded the scope of communication training to veterinary medicine through educational grants from sponsors such as Bayer Animal Health. The Veterinary Communication Project at IHC was developed to address gaps in veterinarian-client communication training at veterinary schools. To address those gaps, the project has produced 16 educational modules with tools and resources for improving communication skills on a variety of topics (listed below). Teaching communication in veterinary medicine is now endorsed across the profession through national reports such as the North American Veterinary Medical Education Consortium, Partners for Healthy Pets, Brakke and Mega studies, Bayer Veterinary Care Usage Study, veterinary curriculum standards as set by AVMA Council of Education, and the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination testing of client communication skills for licensure. In addition, veterinary academic surveys have consistently demonstrated that practice success is dependent upon effective communication skills, and consumer surveys show that good communication is the number one priority when animal owners choose or decide to stay with a veterinary practice. Since 2003, close to 500 faculty members have been trained to teach the IHC’s veterinary communication modules within the curriculum in schools of veterinary medicine and technology across the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, Portugal, Brazil and Chile.
In addition to the Veterinary Communication Project faculty training offered to veterinary school faculty, IHC has provided over 200 invited presentations, workshops and seminars at state, national and international veterinary conferences. Target audiences have included veterinary professionals in practice, research, industry and academia.
The next Veterinary Communication Train-the-Trainer course will be held in person in 2024. For more information contact info@healthcarecomm.org.

IHC Faculty (Train-the-Trainer) Development Course
IHC has held an annual week-long train-the-trainer (faculty development) course, which has been attended by close to 500 faculty members from academic institutions and veterinary organizations. The teaching and learning format of the course is highly interactive and includes small group learning, case-based training, and simulated-client scenarios that allows for immediate application. Participants take away with enhanced skill development in three areas:
1) teaching and facilitation;
2) client and team communication and;
3) coaching and feedback.
Each faculty participant leaves the training with the use of IHC’s veterinary communication modules. Tuition fees and annual license to use IHC’s copyrighted materials apply.
IHC has also offered train-the-trainer programs onsite for organizations and institutions who are invested in training a critical mass of employees. Onsite programs have been offered at Michigan State University, University of Calgary, University of Florida, Texas A&M University, and in medical organizations throughout the United States, Canada, and Australia.
“I have worked in the field for 44 years and now feel empowered to really model and teach communication skills to my students, interns and residents. I wish I could take this every month. I am privileged to be a part of this program and hoping for a follow-up retreat for re-training.”
